🌑 Night Prompt: The Thing Your Shadow Has Been Hiding

AI Prompt: Tonight, as you turn off the last light in your home, you notice your shadow doesn’t fall where it should. It lingers a half‑second behind your movements, like it’s thinking for itself.

Then it does something impossible: It reaches into itself and pulls out an object—small, glowing faintly, and unmistakably meant for you.

Write the moment you realize your shadow has been keeping a secret from you for years… and what it finally decided to give back.

Response: There is something massive and terrifying crawling along the side of my house. I can’t see it, yet, but I know it’s there. It’s been hunting me for years. It takes a while to find me, as I move from place to place, but it always finds me. This time, it took six months as I sped across the world, but here it was again. Black, but a deep, endless black that had no allegory in nature. Crossed between reptilian and insectoid, it defied nature, it defied gravity. It was a profoundly disturbing of unnatural in everything it did.

But I’ve never actually seen it. It lives only in my mind’s eye. This clear, terrifying nightmare that has been by my side for decades exists but does not exist. Buddhist myth says that there are no such things as demons, just the unmanaged debris of a cluttered, illusioned mind. This demon has to exist. It is so clear, there’s no way it is a construction.

I’ve always played the game, followed the rules, attempted to be what others wanted me to be. I’m a good person. I am unselfish, I am generous, I am compassionate, I am kind. Demons shouldn’t hunt good people. It would not be fair to have sacrificed so much to be eaten by this creature of darkness. But it still follows me. It hisses, it clicks, it hunts me. It has a long thin tongue and no eyes, because it only consumes; it doesn’t see.

It crawls along the side of my house, tapping gently with spider-like, pointy legs as it creeps toward the window, it’s long tongue whipping out to taste the air. It knows I’m here, it knows I don’t want to see it. I close my eyes tight and wish it away.

On the off-chance the Buddhists are right, I open my eyes. If the shadow actually is just my repressed sense of self; if it truly is the conglomeration of rejection, abandonment, brutal self-hatred and unmanaged emotions, I will never get away from it. If the reason it follows me is just because it is all the unlovely parts of myself that I’ve rejected from my own mind, then I’ll be hunted forever and trapped within this artificial construct of self that is incomplete and terrified of nothing.

The tapping stopped, something must have resonated with it. I get up and force myself to open the window and look out. There it is. It’s even more hideous in person. The tongue reaches out to taste my face and snaps back into its outsized jaws. It crawls up to butt its head against my hand, like a cat wanting pets. I feel stupid. It’s not evil, it’s ugly. It’s not a demon, it’s my own sense of self. The Buddhists must have figured it out.

I pet the creature. It seems noticeably smaller now, shrinking as I watch it cuddle my hand. I pick it up off the window and take it back to bed with me, cradling it in the hollow of my shoulder so it can sleep on both me and the pillow. It’s now the size of a rabbit and just as soft. Still unnaturally black, still reptilian, still startling, but it’s carapace is covered in something velvety and snuggly. It’s thin legs are delicate, not sharp.

It’s fast asleep on the pillow, cradled and comfortable. I close my eyes and wait for discomfort or fear, but mostly just feel a tired relief as I drop back into slumber.
